Martin Luther king Jr was the first black leader to be peaceful in his approach to the confrontation with racist’s whites. Unlike earlier black leaders who where mostly violent in there approach towards the white people, Martin Luther king Jr thought that the peaceful approach was better, and it was. This peaceful approach helped the movement of civil rights because it helped to show that the black people were not dangerous or were not going to harm the white people in anyway. As a child Martin Luther King Jr was raised as a catholic and was highly religious. He was restricted in many ways because he was ‘black’ or ‘impure’. He had white friends that he used to play with but he was not allowed to sit with them on the bus or at the movies. He was also treated badly on the bus where he was sworn at, abused and was forced to give up his seat and to stand up. Martin Luther King wanted to become a doctor or lawyer, but decided to help the black community. With the influences of others such as Howard Thurman, the leader of the civil rights movement was a major influence in Martin’s life. He was determined to achieve the freedom of black people in a non-violent approach, and Ghandi, who achieved peace in India with non-violent activism inspired him to do so. “We are determined to be men, we are determined to be people.
